Bled is one of Slovenia’s most charming destinations, known not only for its stunning lake but also for its medieval castle, quaint village streets, and beautiful surrounding nature. If you’re visiting Ljubljana, a trip to Bled is easy and affordable. I actually spent a night there to fully enjoy the town’s peaceful atmosphere, but honestly, it’s entirely possible to explore Bled in a single day.

Getting There: Bus from Ljubljana
I took the Arriva bus from Ljubljana early in the morning, and in under an hour, I arrived in Bled. Tickets are budget-friendly, especially if booked in advance, and the buses are comfortable with free Wi-Fi, a great way to relax before exploring. The bus drops you right near the center of the town, so no additional transport is necessary.
Exploring Bled Village and Surroundings
Bled Castle:
Perched on a cliff overlooking the lake and village, Bled Castle is a must-see. Beyond the stunning views, you can explore the small museum, the castle chapel, and the historic wine cellar. Stop at the café for a coffee or try a local treat while enjoying the panorama of the lake and town below.
Bled Island:
The lake’s small island is iconic, but the experience extends beyond the water. Take a traditional “pletna” boat to the island, climb the steps to the Church of the Assumption, and ring the wishing bell for luck. Even just viewing it from the lakeside promenade gives you the fairytale feeling.
Village Streets & Local Life:
The village itself is charming, with streets lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants. Take a stroll, enjoy local pastries, or just watch the town wake up in the morning. The relaxed vibe makes it perfect for a leisurely day trip.
Food & Treats:
Don’t leave Bled without trying “kremšnita,” the famous cream cake. I enjoyed mine at a café overlooking the lake, but there are plenty of bakeries in the village where you can try it. Local restaurants also offer traditional Slovenian dishes, perfect for a relaxing lunch after sightseeing.

Hiking & Viewpoints
Bled is surrounded by beautiful hills, which offer some of the best views of the lake, castle, and village.
Ojstrica:
This was my favorite viewpoint. The hike is fairly short but can be a bit steep in places, so bring sturdy walking shoes. Visiting in April meant it wasn’t too crowded, which made enjoying the panoramic views of Lake Bled, the island, and castle even more special. Sunrise or late afternoon is perfect for photos.
Mala Osojnica:
Another popular viewpoint, slightly more challenging than Ojstrica, offers incredible perspectives of the lake and surrounding mountains. Both trails are worth it if you have time and energy.
Bled Castle Viewpoint:
Even if you don’t hike far, the castle itself offers incredible vantage points of the lake and town. The terraces and walls make it easy to take great photos without any strenuous walking.

Tips for a Perfect Visit
- Overnight optional: I stayed one night to enjoy the sunset and early morning calm, but a day trip is entirely doable.
- Best time to visit: Spring, summer, or early autumn offers the best weather and scenery.
- What to wear: Comfortable shoes for walking and light layers for changing weather.
- Budget tip: Taking an Arriva bus back to Ljubljana in the evening is cheap and convenient.
Conclusion
Bled is more than just a lake, it’s a full experience. Between the historic castle, the charming village, the iconic island, and the surrounding nature, it feels like stepping into a storybook. Thanks to the bus, getting there from Ljubljana is stress-free and affordable. Even if you only have a day, Bled offers unforgettable sights, delicious food, and a peaceful escape into Slovenian charm.
