A Food Lover’s Guide to New York City: My Favorite Eats

New York City is a paradise for food lovers. From tacos to bagels, pizza to cookies, every neighborhood offers its own culinary treasures. During my eight-day trip to NYC, I discovered some spots that were simply unforgettable. Here’s a curated list of my favorite food experiences, perfect for anyone planning a foodie-focused trip.

Breakfast, Coffee & Brunch

Ess-A-Bagel – Multiple Locations
A classic spot for a New York breakfast. The bagels are big and chewy, with lots of cream cheese flavors to choose from. You can also add smoked salmon, which is a local favorite. The shop has a simple deli-style look, and it feels very authentic. Great for starting your day full and ready to explore.

Blank Street – Multiple Locations
A modern coffee chain with tasty coffee and fresh pastries. It’s perfect for a quick breakfast or snack while walking around SoHo or other neighborhoods. The staff is friendly, and the coffee is strong and smooth.

Joe Coffee Company – Multiple Locations
A cozy local coffee chain with several spots around Manhattan (Flatiron, Chelsea, Union Square, Bryant Park, etc.). They roast their own coffee and serve espresso, drip coffee, and cold brew. Great for a morning pick-me-up or coffee to-go.

Ole & Steen – Multiple Locations
A Danish bakery and café with a warm, homey atmosphere. They serve breakfast items like oatmeal, skyr with fruit, and Danish-style sandwiches. The pastries are beautiful and perfect for a quick breakfast or light snack.

Lunch

Los Mariscos – Chelsea Market
My favorite place of this trip! A seafood spot with fresh and flavorful dishes. Their ceviche is light and zesty, and the shrimp tacos are full of flavor. Chelsea Market itself is fun to explore with dozens of food stalls, shops, and a lively atmosphere. A great place to eat and then wander around.

Los Tacos No. 1 – Financial District & Chelsea Market
These tacos are famous for a reason. Try the grilled cactus or carne asada tacos, they are very tasty and authentic. The Chelsea Market location can be crowded, so the Financial District location is a good alternative if you want a quicker lunch.

Nolita Pizza – Little Italy
A small, cozy pizzeria in the heart of Little Italy. The pizza slices are thin, crispy, and topped with tasty pepperoni. It’s perfect to grab a slice and eat while walking through the charming streets. A true New York pizza experience.

Butler – DUMBO, Brooklyn
A trendy cafe with coffee and pastries, perfect for lunch. The DUMBO location has amazing views of Manhattan and the waterfront. Their pastries are fresh and flavorful, and the atmosphere is relaxed, great for a mid-day break.

Lenwich – Midtown
A modern deli with several locations in Midtown. They serve fresh sandwiches, wraps, and salads. Popular options include the “Steak’wich” with grilled beef and peppers, and vegetarian choices. Perfect for a quick, filling lunch in Midtown.

Dinner

La Masseria – Near Times Square
A warm, cozy Italian restaurant with generous pasta portions. It’s a good spot to relax after a busy day of sightseeing or a Broadway show. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is inviting. Perfect for a hearty dinner.

The Harold – Midtown
A stylish bistro offering a mix of American and international dishes, including pasta, sandwiches, and small plates. The warm and inviting atmosphere makes it a great dinner spot.

Au Cheval – Midtown
An upscale spot for American comfort food. The burgers are thick and juicy, and the sides are very tasty. It’s a bit expensive, so it’s perfect for a special night out. The food is worth it if you want a high-quality, filling meal.

Chick-fil-A
Classic American fast food for a casual dinner. Their chicken sandwiches are simple but delicious, and it’s a quick and easy meal if you’re tired from a day of sightseeing.

Snacks

Levain Bakery – Upper West Side
Famous for its enormous, soft cookies. The chocolate chip walnut cookie is especially popular. Expect a line, but it moves fairly quickly, and the cookies are worth waiting for. A perfect treat after exploring the city.

Bonus NYC Food Tips

  • Plan for popular spots
Many famous spots like Levain Bakery, Los Tacos No. 1 and Au Cheval can get busy. Try visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid long lines. Making a plan of your day helps you enjoy the food without waiting too long. For Au Cheval you definitely need a reservation!
  • Explore food markets
Markets like Chelsea Market and Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg are perfect for sampling many different foods in one visit. You can find tacos, seafood, pastries, and street food all in one place. Bring cash for small vendors, though many now accept cards.
  • Neighborhoods
Each neighborhood has its own food style and atmosphere:
    • Chelsea: Creative and bustling, great for seafood and market snacks.
    • SoHo: Trendy cafes and stylish coffee spots.
    • Midtown: Classic NYC chains, delis, and casual lunch options.
    • Brooklyn: Relaxed cafes and waterfront dining with amazing views.
